E! sneaked a very meta Good Place reference into their Golden Globes coverage

Last night, during E!’s coverage of the Golden Globes red carpet, Twitter was thrown into a bit of a tizzy over a perceived slight to Good Place star Jameela Jamil. When the actress appeared on screen for her interview, the chyron credited her as “Kamilah Al-Jamil,” which, from an outsider’s perspective, looked like a disastrous case of mistaken identity. But fans of The Good Place knew this was actually a deep-cut reference to their favorite show.

On The Good Place, Jamil plays Tahani Al-Jamil, the incredibly posh, incredibly tall overachiever of the gang. But for all of the success she had when she was still alive, Tahani always felt like she was living in the shadow of her younger, even more successful sister, Kamilah. So, this chyron flub is less of an insult to Jameela Jamil the actress and more of a sick burn on her character from the show. As screenshots started making the rounds on Twitter, the actress herself shared her thoughts on E!’s big gag, calling it “hands down the greatest of red carpet jokes.”

According to Vulture, E! later corrected themselves at the end of the broadcast just in case anyone took offense. We’re just hoping whoever was running the chyron last night got a raise or at least a copy of The Good Place on Blu-ray.
