Eclipse

Eclipse

In the days leading up to a total solar eclipse, some Toronto residents become involved in a series of sexual encounters that, while leaving them unsatisfied, unwittingly links them together. Writer/director Jeremy Podeswa employs a style that's more than a little reminiscent of fellow Canadian Atom Egoyan, but employs it too effectively to seem derivative. Podeswa's willingness to allow his artfully filmed, skillfully conceived vignettes to speak largely for themselves without drawing obvious parallels is particularly impressive. In doing so, he creates an atmosphere that is almost clinically detached from its subject—an effect enhanced by the inclusion of pseudo-documentary segments concerning eclipses—but which somehow accumulates emotional weight through the course of the film, and leads to a conclusion that is genuinely moving, if unexplainably so.
