Eddie Murphy and Brett Ratner are reuniting for a Netflix mockumentary
Eddie Murphy and Brett Ratner sure seem to like working together, even if they’ve only done so once. After Ratner directed Murphy in 2011’s Tower Heist, the pair set out to introduce Alex Foley to a new generation with Beverly Hills Cop 4, though the sequel hasn’t gotten off the ground yet. But it seems nothing can keep them apart, as the newfound friends have just found a new project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy and Ratner are in talks to star in and direct, respectively, a mockumentary for Netflix.
The project, Soul Soul Soul: The Murray Murray Story, comes from Chris Case (Legit, Titus), and will follow the titular Murray Murray (Murphy), an “iconic ’60s soul singer” whose faded glory is revived after a contemporary act samples one of his hits. His renewed relevance inspires Murray to get his band back together in “the hopes of taking down hip-hop,” because the only reason to write new music is to shoot down other new music, apparently. Ratner will presumably be on hand to help Case come up with some hilarious pranks for Murray to play on the hip, new hip-hop acts of today, like replacing their smartphones with Jitterbugs.
