Edgar Wright, James Ponsoldt, and a bunch of other directors had a delightful meeting on Twitter last night

August is the elephant graveyard of the film calendar, typically a wasteland of the worst summer releases, every week yielding new hastily dumped studio disasters fading into the mist. But this year there’s quite the embarrassment of riches, from The World’s End (in only around 1,500 theaters) and a plethora of other limited releases worth your time. Short Term 12 director Destin Cretton recognized the array of talent hopefully taking up residence in a theater near you, and sent out a Tweet naming a few fellow directors. He was joined shortly thereafter by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies), James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) Lynn Shelton (the upcoming Touchy Feely), and Edgar Wright, who proceeded to digitally clap each other on the back—and then propose a hypothetical anthology film using only the cast of Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Considering Wright has Marvel’s Ant-Man on the docket, and the other directors surely have new projects lined up as well, it’s a total pipedream, but it was still a nice moment—Ponsoldt accurately referred to it as a “Twitter group hug”—and proof that the requirement for public figures to maintain a social media presence sometimes yields an unexpected glimpse behind the curtain.
