Edward James Olmos to play a reformed hitman on Fox’s Urban Cowboy
Edward James Olmos is the latest addition to the cast of Fox’s upcoming Urban Cowboy series, according to Deadline. John Travolta and Debra Winger starred in the original, about two star-crossed lovers trying to follow their dreams against the backdrop of 1980s Texas; the drama pilot is a modern reimagining of the same title.
Battlestar Galactica and Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran Olmos will play Alfonso “Al” Robles, who moves to Texas to reinvent himself after life as a hitman for a Mexican cartel. Al seems to have turned his life around, and now he’s a husband and father and has an upper-level management job. But when he’s called upon to help his niece and nephew flee a bad situation in Mexico, his violent past comes back to haunt him.
Written and directed by Craig Brewer, Fox’s Urban Cowboy also stars Alfonso Herrera as leading man Kyle, the updated version of Travolta’s original character. Kyle and Gaby are star-crossed lovers just living their lives in the “glamour of modern Texas,” whatever that means. Gaby has not been cast yet, because no one can figure out who the Debra Winger of 2015 is. Jim Belushi also stars as a a long-haul-truck-driver-turned-honky-tonk-owner, because everyone is trying to escape their past on Urban Cowboy.
