Who he is: El Diablo, a.k.a. Chato Santana
His power: Diablo is a metahuman who can control fire, to the degree that by film’s end, he becomes a literal living fire creature, which is cool, if wholly unexplained in the movie.
His story: Santana is the most reluctant member of the Task Force X team put together by Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad to carry out high-risk missions. He was a gang leader who used his superpower of control over fire to rise to the top of his underworld, but who lost control one night and set fire to his home, killing his family members caught inside. He refused to use his powers afterward, until Deadshot pushes him to activate his fire abilities during the mission to take down the Enchantress. He unleashes a powerful blast and thereafter becomes a valuable team member. During the climactic battle, he sacrifices himself in a fight with Enchantress’ brother, Incubus, in order to stop the villains from achieving their world-destroying goal. One of the few characters in Suicide Squad who actually has a narrative arc—good for him!

Where will we see him next? A reboot anytime soon is unlikely, though it’s possible the DC Universe could pull a Phil Coulson with the character.
