Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack are both expected to appear in "supporting roles" in the 20-years-later sequel to their Stephen King adaptation.

Elijah Wood and Natalia Dyer to star in unexpected, unrequested 1408 sequel

Today, in “Why does Elijah Wood keep co-starring in extremely unnecessary sequels to decent horror movies?” news: Elijah Wood and Stranger Things veteran Natalia Dyer have both signed on to star in a follow-up to 2007 Stephen King adaptation 1408. Specifically, Dyer will (per Variety) take on the starring role in the unexpected sequel, while Wood will land in a supporting one, with both appearing alongside original stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Details about the sequel movie, which is being directed by original 1408 director Mikael Håfström, from a script he co-wrote with Mark Verheiden, are being kept quiet. (It feels worth noting that King never wrote a sequel to the original short story, which Håfström already had to stretch out pretty extensively to get to feature length two decades ago.) The fact that Cusack’s character will appear, alongside Jackson’s, in a supporting role, suggests that, of the original film’s various endings, ones where horror writer Mike Enslin survived are likely canon; on the other hand, this is a story centered on a haunted hotel room, so…

Reports that a 1408 sequel was in early development began circulating last week. (Building on comments Cusack made last year about how it was one of his only films he thinks deserves a continuation.) Dyer is, of course, still fresh off of Stranger Things, which she starred in for its entire run; Wood most recently popped up on the animated Among Us TV series, and before that, the previously alluded-to Ready Or Not 2.
