Emily Blunt uncovers the dark underbelly of the drug war in the Sicario trailer
Sicario is director Denis Villeneuve’s latest in a line of dark thrillers, ominously presented in a new trailer. It stars Emily Blunt as an FBI hostage specialist dragged into the violent, morally ambiguous underbelly of the war on drugs. Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin co-star as the overseers of a shady interagency border task force, typically code for “guys who do a whole lot of murder.”
The A.V. Club’s Ignatiy Vishnevetsky caught Sicario at Cannes, where it was competing for the Palm D’or. He gave the whole thing a mostly positive B+, saying: “Villeneuve’s style is portentous, all shadowy stares and atmosphere, glistening black SUVs moving across an arid landscape dominated by a wide expanse of sky. He directs Sicario as though it were a horror film[…]”
The trailer maintains that horror vibe, allowing us mere glimpses of corpses stuffed into walls and lead actresses getting strangled while a nasty, bass-heavy score pulses in the background. Hopefully Villeneuve will bring some of that quiet, unsettling energy to his still-untitled Blade Runner sequel, which is set to star Harrison Ford and cause hugely divisive fights between fans of Ridley Scott’s original film.
Sicario will be released on September 18, 2015 in U.S. theaters.
