Emma Stone's Cruella De Vil movie will be an '80s punk rock origin story, obviously
We’ve been reporting since back before La La Land that one of Emma Stone’s next projects was going to be a profoundly weird one: The fan Favourite has been in line for years now to be the next star of one of Disney’s Maleficent-style live-action villain origin stories, in the form of a new film focused on animation’s most fashionable dog murderer, Cruella De Vil.
Now, Disney has leaked a few more details about Cruella, including the fact that I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie—potentially stepping in for Mozart In The Jungle co-creator Alex Timbers—might helm the film, and the fact that it’s apparently being billed as an “origin story set in the early 1980s with a punk vibe.” Because after all, what says “punk rock” better than a determined effort to subvert the rules of fashion by including “adorable puppies” in the list of animals it’s acceptable to turn into frocks? Aline Brosh McKenna (whose credits, fittingly, include The Devil Wears Prada and the co-creation of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), has previously been listed as a writer on the project, although it’s not clear if she’s still involved.
Cruella has had a weird history over the years; she was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in the original 101 Dalmatians movie, and played by Glenn Close in the live-action remake and its sequel. She also popped up on ABC’s absolutely bonkers Once Upon A Time, played by Victoria Smurfit, where she used her psychic control of animals to force a bunch of dalmatians to tear her mother apart, then got killed and became the temporary queen of hell. Which is also, you know, pretty punk.
Anyway, someone should tell The Ramones: Mr. Burns is finally cool!
