Eric Reynolds, Ed.: Dirty Stories
Sex and comics are pretty much inseparable, and with a few notable and mostly forgettable exceptions, comic sex is actually pretty healthy. Well, perhaps the actual exploits comic artists choose to show aren't all that healthy, but face it: Drawing someone screwing a guy in a mouse suit is a lot healthier than going to the Magic Kingdom and doing it yourself. It's also smarter, and more of a commentary on art and business and so on, and funnier, too. There are thirty-odd artists featured in the new Dirty Stories anthology, with stuff ranging from absurd and scary stories of mouse-love to a series of sexworthy landscapes to a provocative set of still-life drawings modeled after Japanese ukieo-e prints. There's the occasional mean-spirited strip, too—notably, Peter Bagge's take on cyber-daters—but the best of these pieces manage to be sexy and funny at the same time. For the most part, it isn't really erotica, but it isn't repellently and gratuitously raunchy, either: There's a point, if maybe a silly one, to everything in Dirty Stories. And the art is uniformly wonderful, which shouldn't be surprising given that Eros Comics is a division of Fantagraphics. Grown-ups will love it.
