After his relationship with Erykah Badu ended, Andre 3000 wrote the breakup song “Ms. Jackson,” in which he asked forgiveness from Badu’s mother for making her daughter cry. He’s since apologized a trillion times (roughly, given the song’s extensive play since 2000), but when the song was first released, it hit a sore spot for Badu. The Mama’s Gun artist recently admitted on the Rap Radar podcast that she wasn’t ready to hear Andre 3000’s apology at the time, but her mom was really into being the titular lady.
Badu liked Andre 3000’s verse, but took some exception with Big Boi’s, which, in case you’ve forgotten, ends with him basically telling her to go to hell (with her mom). Still, according to Badu, her mother was thrilled to be immortalized this way: “How did my mama feel? Baby, she bought herself a ‘Ms. Jackson’ license plate. She had the mug, she had the ink pen, she had the headband, everything. That’s who loved it.” Maybe “Ms. Jackson” was swayed by all the adorable animals that rapped alongside Andre 3000 and Big Boi in the video.
