Evangeline Lilly and Barry Humphries join The Hobbit

Slightly elfin actress Evangeline Lilly will stir up some of the same confusing feelings Liv Tyler did by joining the cast of The Hobbit, Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s plans for a super-profitable movie franchise. Lilly will play an all-new character, “the Woodland Elf, Tauriel,” and while Jackson didn’t offer much elaboration while announcing the addition on his Facebook page, he did take pains to say that she would not be romancing Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, so certain unusual women out there can continue to write their fan fiction in peace. Jackson also welcomed Barry Humphries, who will leave behind the billowy dresses of his Dame Edna alter ego for a more form-fitting motion-capture suit to play the Goblin King, “in much the same way Andy Serkis created Gollum,” according to Jackson. And as with most of these Hobbit casting notices, we leave Lilly and Humphries with an example of the future YouTube tribute videos they can look forward to—though probably not one scored to an inappropriate song by punk band Aiden, as Liv Tyler got that already.
