Even Robert Downey Jr. thinks Guardians Of The Galaxy is the best Marvel movie

He’s not known for his humility, but Robert Downey Jr. can be a good guy when he wants to. And apparently that good nature, tempered by the passage of time and a Scrooge McDuck-level payday or two, extends to his comrades in the Marvel salt mines.

Downey Jr. sat down for an interview with The Toronto Sun, in advance of the premiere of his new movie, The Judge, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it was there he offered his endorsement of a Marvel movie he had nothing to do with. “[Guardians Of The] Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever,” Downey said, his perfectly straight teeth blinding white against his glowing, poreless skin. “And it’s odd for someone with—on occasion— an ego the size of mine to actually say that!”

The reporter’s eyes started to glaze over, lost in a blissful reverie. Robert Downey Jr. knew this look. “It’s like you have a great quarterback, and his brother plays for another team, and then you say: ‘Look, this is their second cousin and we think he has a great arm and he should start’,” he said, idly pulling a $100 bill from his pocket and ripping it into pieces as he spoke. “And then he goes and wins the Superbowl!”

“We’re talking about how the Iron Mans and the Thors and the Captain Americas and the Avengers movies have afforded Marvel the opportunity to essentially take what was a third-tier, minor, kind of upstart bit of potential from one of their comic books series and say: ‘Look!’,” Downey whispered, gently stroking the reporter’s clammy cheek with his perfect, sinewy hand. Robert Downey Jr. leaned in and pressed his lips, just barely, against the reporter’s forehead, causing the man to blink and look around as if awoken from a deep and dreamless sleep. Robert Downey Jr. smiled. The digital recorder was still running. His work here was done.
