Of course Apple TV Plus has a star-studded TV show lineup for 2024
The streamer unveiled a first look at 8 new TV shows, including Colin Farrell's Sugar and Michael Douglas' Franklin
Apple TV+ has quickly become a go-to platform for underrated dramas, big-budget franchises, and Emmy-winning comedies. This year is shaping up to be another strong one, at least if the upcoming content slate is any indication. At the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter press tour, Apple TV+ unveiled its plans to keep audiences busy during the spring and summer.
Here’s a first look video and some images teasing what to expect, including a murder mystery starring Colin Farrell (a treat we deserve), Michael Douglas as Benjamin Franklin, and Eva Longoria in a Spain-set family dramedy. The video also teases Natalie Portman’s drama, Lady Of The Lake, and some movies on the platform, from Killers Of The Flower Moon to Napolean.
The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin (3/1): The 18th century set irreverent British comedy is about Dick Turpin (Noel Fielding), a reluctant leader of a band of outlaws tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville). At the Television Critics Association panel, EP Kenton Allen cites their main “joyously anachronistic” pop culture inspirations were The Princess Bride and The Monty Python films, if that helps you figure out what type of humor to expect.
Manhunt (3/15): The seven-part limited series sees Outlander’s Tobias Menzies as Edwin Stanton, an American lawyer and politician who led the search for John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle) after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Will Harrison, Brandon Flynn, Damian O’Hare, Lovie Simone, Glenn Morshower, and Patton Oswalt co-star. Expect a trailer soon, but for now, enjoy Midnight Mass’ Hamish Linklater in his best Lincoln cosplay:
Palm Royale (3/20): Let’s take a minute to appreciate the cast of this comedy series; we’ve got Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Leslie Bibb, and Carol Burnett. Set in Florida in 1969, the dramedy is about Maxine Simmons (Wiig), who will do anything to be accepted into the fancy Palm Royale club to mingle with the elite crowd. Anything.
Sugar (4/5): Here’s one everyone (read: us) is most looking forward to. The Farrell-led genre-bending crime drama is about a private investigator named John Sugar. He looks into the mysterious disappearance of a Hollywood producer’s granddaughter. In the process, he uncovers dark secrets about their family and the industry. The cast includes Amy Ryan, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, James Cromwell, and Anna Gunn.
Franklin (4/12): In the 1776-set drama, Douglas plays a 70-year-old Benjamin Franklin on the brink of embarking on a secret mission as the fate of American independence hangs in the balance. The limited series co-stars Noah Jupe and is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, And the Birth of America.
Dark Matter (5/8): Adding to Apple TV+’s sci-fi genre (along with For All Mankind, Silo, and Foundation) is Dark Matter. It centers on Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist and professor abducted into an alternate version of his life. Once he returns home, the lines blur, and his biggest wonder becomes his biggest nightmare. To sort things out, he has to face an unexpected enemy: A version of himself. Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, and Jimmi Simpson co-star.
Presumed Innocent (6/14): David E. Kelley will never free us. The prolific creator’s next series is based on Scott Turow’s novel of the same name. The thriller follows prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is suspected of a crime that upends the Chicago Attorney’s office. The star-studded ensemble includes Renate Reinsve, Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, and O-T Fagbenle.
Land Of Women (Summer 2024): Eva Longoria is back on TV as a rich and desperate housewife, but in totally different circumstances. She plays Gala, a wealthy empty nester in New York City who goes on the run after her husband’s financial choices land them in trouble. She flees with her college-going daughter, Kate (Victoria Bazua), and aging mother, Julia (Carmen Maura), to a wine town in Spain. It’s the same village her mom fled decades ago. The women have to start fresh and contend with their roots. The show is based on Sandra Barneda’s novel.
Along with these, Apple TV+ announced premiere dates for its returning shows as well:
