Everyone but Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara returning for Christopher Guest’s Mascots
As we reported earlier this month, Christopher Guest has signed an agreement with Netflix to make his next mockumentary (called Mascots) for the streaming service. But we apologize for filling your head with images of Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara in frog costumes, because as it turns out, they’re pretty much the only members of the Guest extended family who aren’t in talks for Mascots, which is set in the world of sports mascots.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge (who agrees she should have won an Oscar for her groundbreaking work in A Cinderella Story), and Bob Balaban are all in negotiations to co-star in Mascots, which—like most Guest films—will have a strong emphasis on improvisation. The five actors all appeared in Guest’s three most recent films: For Your Consideration, A Mighty Wind, and Best In Show. Posey and Balaban have been in the family the longest, starring in Guest’s Waiting For Guffman in 1996. They’ll reunite at The 8th World Mascot Association Championships in Mascots.
Unfortunately, according to insiders, Levy—who co-wrote For Your Consideration, A Mighty Wind, Best In Show, and Waiting For Guffman with Guest—and O’Hara won’t be a part of the new movie. This could be because of scheduling conflicts, since they’re both starring in Schitt’s Creek, but after Wet Hot American Summer pulled off the scheduling miracles it did, no one should be allowed to use scheduling as an excuse anymore.
And while Levy and O’Hara might be out, Chris O’Dowd is reportedly in for his first Guest feature. O’Dowd previously worked with Guest on his short-lived HBO series Family Tree. O’Dowd has appeared in Bridesmaids, St. Vincent, and on HBO’s Girls. Mascots is slated to start shooting in November in Los Angeles.
