Now that the death of Bin Laden has provided some comfort after a decade spent in anger and frustration, and briefly united a divided nation in spontaneous celebration and “Donald Trump wants to see the death certificate” jokes on Twitter, the question is obvious: How soon can we get this story in a movie theater? Apparently, not long, as Deadline reports that The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow has been quietly prepping an indie film called Kill Bin Laden for quite some time, and while it’s about a previous failed attempt to try and kill the Al Qaeda leader—one that sounds as though it’s primarily focused on the men involved in the mission, not necessarily the mission itself—Sunday’s announcement suggests that Bigelow’s film could very well have a new happy ending if she wants it. And with Oracle scion Megan Ellison ready to provide funding for the film even before the news broke, and would-be Bourne Joel Edgerton already reportedly in the running for the lead, it seems as though Bigelow is in a fairly good position to be the first to profit from the quick surge of patriotic fervor.
Also possibly getting tossed back on the studio table this week: The Paramount adaptation of Gary Berntsen’s Jawbreaker, the non-fiction account of the December 2001 raid on Tora Bora that failed to yield Bin Laden, a film version of which stalled out around 2006. Both of these will likely join the 100 other “kill Bin Laden” movies that are going to be pitched in the following days (with or without The Rock) to see which will be the first to provide the vicarious violent thrills necessary for our sense of closure.
