Everything sucks for Everything Sucks!, because Netflix just canceled it

Turning its title unintentionally prophetic, Netflix has announced that it’s breaking up with its ’90s-set dramedy series Everything Sucks!, ending the series after only a single season. Starring Jahi Di’Allo Winston as a young filmmaker, and Peyton Kennedy as the classmate he has a crush on (and who wrestles with her own growing feelings toward one of her female classmates), the show drew middling reviews for its nostalgic look at ’90s teen life, and—in the words of our own Erik Adams—“the wildly divergent tones and techniques” it brought to bear on what was, in many ways, a very generic coming-of-age story, albeit one with a lot of cans of Surge hanging around the set.

Everything Sucks! is just the latest in Netflix’s rapidly growing pile of canceled shows; after years of building a reputation as a place where series could run freely for years, the service has gotten more aggressive of late. Other recently axed shows include Haters Back Off!, Maria Bamford’s Lady Dynamite, and Kathy Bates’ pot comedy Disjointed.
