Ewan McGregor and his mustache are hotel-bound in the A Gentleman In Moscow trailer
Ewan McGregor’s facial hair supremacy continues in an Amor Towles adaptation
Following up on his incredible beard work in a galaxy far, far away, Ewan McGregor is taking his knack for stylish and full facial hair to Russia. Armed with nothing more than a thick pushbroom hanging over his upper lip and a positive mental attitude, Ewan McGregor stars in A Gentleman In Moscow, an eight-episode limited series coming to Paramount+ with Showtime.
Based on the international bestseller by Amor Towles, A Gentleman In Moscow follows Count Alexander Rostov (McGregor), whose life is upended by the Russian Revolution. Count Rostov’s gilded lifestyle doesn’t jive with the socialist desire to overthrow and abolish the monarchy. Being that his very existence is an insult to the socialist state, the Bolshevik tribunal sentences him to life in suite 3177 of the Hotel Metropol. It’s an attic bedroom with a bed that squeaks in G#. That mustache clearly protects Rostov from having the smile wiped off his face, as this dude was having too much fun to flee Russia. Instead, like Royal Tenenbaum and Dunston, he turns his hotel into a home.
A Gentleman In Moscow reunites McGregor with real-life wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who starred opposite a different mustachioed McGregor on Fargo. She plays Anna Urbanova, a self-made film actor of some note, despite making movies that aren’t very good, according to Rostov’s young friend Nina (Alexa Goodall). Nevertheless, she is but one of the characters Rostov meets in his hotel-cum-prison. There’s also a secret police officer, Osip (Johnny Harris), who, apparently, was shot in the back of his head once, so it’s probably best to steer clear of that guy.
A Gentleman In Moscow premieres on Paramount+ With Showtime after being unceremoniously demoted from Showtime in that recent rebranding. It must be such a joy to create a series for a premium cable network like Showtime, only to find out it’s getting dumped on something called Paramount+ with Showtime, but we have to assume someone over there knows what they’re doing, right? Right?!
The series premieres on Paramount+ accounts with access to the “with Showtime” content offerings on March 29.
