Exclusive DC preview: Supervillains go to war in Convergence: Suicide Squad #2
With the recent release of the Suicide Squad film cast photo, DC’s team of supervillains has never had a higher profile. Those unfamiliar with the Suicide Squad concept can get a solid primer from the team’s Convergence miniseries, which features the classic version of the group. Considering how many villains were a part of John Ostrander’s original Suicide Squad run, there’s a lot of flexibility in “classic,” but writer Frank Tieri has included the most important faces: Amanda Waller, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang, all of whom will appear in the Suicide Squad film.
Convergence: Suicide Squad #2 sees the villains facing off against characters from Kingdom Come, the ’90s miniseries that directly tackled the growing darkness of superhero comics. This preview, however, spends more time on the tensions within the Squad. That shot of the fight between the two groups is given a lot of energy by artist Tom Mandrake, and he deserves extra kudos for presenting an Amanda Waller that is large, in charge, and more than capable of handling herself in a fight. Viola Davis’ Waller is the one main character that doesn’t appear in the Suicide Squad cast photo, but hopefully the film does her more justice than Green Lantern, because The Wall is one of DC’s most captivating characters.
