Exclusive DC preview: Wonder Woman goes to war in DC Bombshells #2

DC Bombshells has quickly become one of the most pleasant surprises in DC’s lineup, taking a ’40s pin-up-inspired concept and using it to create a captivating World War II-era story spotlighting DC’s female characters. The first issue teamed writer Marguerite Bennett with artist Marguerite Sauvage for an exciting start to the series, and while Sauvage steps away from the second issue, Bennett has a trio of strong artists to keep these stories visually engaging. Laura Braga joins Bennett to complete Wonder Woman’s origin, partnering Diana with the aquatic heroine Mera to protect Paradise Island from the evil forces gathering outside its borders, and Braga’s clean, bright style brings strong energy to these preview pages from this week’s DC Bombshells #2.

While it’s unfortunate that DC isn’t committing to an all-female creative team for this series, the publisher is still bringing some excellent artistic talent to the title. Stephen Mooney’s creator-owned series Half Past Danger showcased his love for pulp adventure stories, making him a great fit for this title’s setting, and Ted Naifeh’s recent work on Princess Ugg has sharpened his talent for drawing ass-kicking women that have both strength and grace. Mooney tackles Stargirl and Supergirl’s exploits in the Soviet Union while Naifeh introduces Zatanna and Joker’s Daughter to the narrative, and the already-released digital issues of the series reveal that these two artists keep the quality of the visuals high while bringing a different flavor to the book.
