Exclusive IDW first look: A hilarious sci-fi comedy gets a sequel with D4VE2

One of the biggest comic surprises of last year was the sci-fi comedy miniseries D4VE, written by Ryan Ferrier with art by Valentin Ramon and published digitally through Monkeybrain Comics. Set in a world where robots have taken over and are now essentially living the same depressing lives humans had before, D4VE spotlights one robotic office worker, D4VE, who used to be an alien-killing hero but is now stuck in a dead-end job with a boss he hates, a wife that constantly belittles him, and a son that could care less about a relationship with his old man. It was a hilarious, imaginative, and gorgeous book, and IDW Publishing released the single issues in print over the last few months, with the final issue hitting stands this past week.

Fans eager for more D4VE have reason to celebrate because this September, the creative team is reuniting for IDW’s D4VE2. “We (Valentin and I) have heard the requests to see more D4VE beyond the first five issues, and we have to agree,” Ferrier says. “D4VE is in our hearts, our blood, and our bones. This is something we have really, really wanted to do for a long time, and we’re beyond thrilled that IDW is giving us the chance to continue this story with D4VE2. We couldn’t be happier to have such a great team behind us, one that is supportive and encouraging, but will also let Valentin and I go downright nutty in this world we’ve made.”

“As for D4VE himself, the first series was just the beginning,” Ferrier continues. “This new story will take him places he never thought imaginable—I think people will flip their lids when they see what we’ve got in store. D4VE2‘s going to have a lot of heart, a lot of action, a lot of language my mom won’t like, a little romance, a little butts, a lot of bad traffic, and a lot of twists and turns. Valentin and I are going full butthorn with this story, and we can’t wait for you to read it.”

The first issue of D4VE2 is slate to hit stands on September 23, and The A.V. Club has a first look at the covers for issues #1 and #2 and promotional art from Ramon. Here’s the official solicitation info:
