Exclusive Marvel preview: Storm and Wolverine hit the dance floor in Storm #2

Marvel’s new Storm series had an outstanding debut last month, telling an emotional, character-based story that captured all the power and grace of the titular heroine. Writer Greg Pak has a firm understanding of Ororo Munroe’s motivations and fears, and the art team of Victor Ibáñez and colorist Ruth Redmond reflects Storm’s personal qualities in the book’s nuanced visuals, transitioning seamlessly from quiet conversations to dramatic superhero action.

The cover of next week’s Storm #2 promises a confrontation between Storm and Callisto of the Morlocks—a society of mutants that live in the sewers of New York City—and it should be one hell of a match, considering the history between the two women. Back in the ’80s, Storm defeated Callisto in battle and briefly became the leader of the Morlocks, and it’s unlikely that Callisto has let go of her grudge.

Ororo is taking a breather before that face-off, hitting a local bar with her boyfriend Wolverine in this preview of Storm #2. It’s a sweet scene looking at how Wolverine has influenced his girlfriend’s current behavior, and shows off Ibáñez’s skill at staging more intimate moments. Storm and Wolverine hitting the dance floor isn’t what readers would normally expect from an X-comic, but taking a less conventional approach is what makes Storm stand out in a crowded superhero landscape.
