Expect some heavy Snowfall in tonight’s season finale

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Thursday, September 20. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Snowfall (FX, 10 p.m.): In his review of Snowfall’s second-season premiere, Kyle Fowle described it as one of those shows that gets good eventually, coaxing you to revisit it after you’d perhaps already abandoned ship. The second season largely follows through on the promise of the end of its first, and does so in particular when it focuses on Franklin. That’s thanks in no small part to Damson Idris’ nuanced, thoughtful performance—and from the looks of things, “Education” will have no shortage of opportunities for Idris to show off his chops. That’s not a happy photo up there, is it? Kyle stands ready to say, once again, that it’s time to climb back on board.

Regular coverage

Wild card

Dead Lucky (Sundance Now, 3:01 a.m.): It’s been a weird, weird week, and it’s Thursday, which means there’s one whole day left in which more crazy shit could happen. With that in mind, perhaps we ought to devote a few of the week’s remaining hours to this four-episode Australian crime series starring Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) and Yoson An (Chen Honghui in the forthcoming live-action Mulan). It’s a mystery! Mysteries, even grim ones, make for terrific diversions. Diversions are good.
