Explore the many lions of the MGM logo through history
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s (MGM) vanity plate, with its roaring lion surrounded by ribbons of golden film reel, is one of those classic looks that seems invincible to the vicissitudes of time and crass corporate rebranding. And while that’s largely true—good old Leo The Lion has been the company’s sole feline avatar for over 50 years—the look (and lions) of the MGM logo has evolved significantly since its first appearance in 1917. In fact, as this video by Movie Munchies demonstrates, Leo is the seventh lion to represent the film studio (not counting the animated version above) and clearly the best—largely since he seems the least bored by the whole affair. It was devastating to learn that the modern roar, however, is not his, and rather an electronically composited assemblage of several big cat roars. Nothing is sacred.
