Ezra Miller is bummed out by the revolving door of Flash directors
Of all the superheroes out there, being the Flash seems like it would be the most fun. He can do everything really fast, his backstory isn’t quite as tragic as some of his contemporaries, and most of his regular villains are more like super-powered thugs than genocidal maniacs. Unfortunately, Ezra Miller—the DC movie universe’s Flash—isn’t having too much fun these days. Two directors have already dropped out of directing Warner Bros.’ upcoming solo Flash movie, and both cited “creative differences” with the studio as the reasoning for their respective exits.
As for Miller, he talked about The Flash a bit in an interview with Collider while promoting Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Regarding these apparent troubles, he says “these processes are complicated,” and “from afar” they can appear to be more “interpersonal or dramatic” then they really are. He explains that there are changes like this all the time on big movies, and we’re just hearing about it this time because it’s the directors who keep leaving. Basically, he’s suggesting that this stuff isn’t as big of a deal as it seems, so there’s no need for anyone to think the Flash movie is in trouble.
That being said, he does refer to these director issues as a “tragic relay race.” He says they’ve “had a couple really incredible people carry this baton,” and once this metaphorical race is done, everyone involved will have left their mark on the finished project. Still, even though he hasn’t even seen a finished script for the film yet, he’s “extremely excited” for it. Hey, Ben Affleck is directing the Batman movie, so maybe Miller should just direct the Flash movie? At least we know he’s one guy who can’t quit.
