Family Guy hits 300 episodes as Brian and Stewie hit the road

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, January 14. All times are Eastern. All the things that make us laugh and cry.

Top pick

Family Guy (Fox, 9 p.m.): Remember when Family Guy got canceled? The show’s checkered history makes it even more surprising that the Fox Sunday night mainstay hits that elusive 300th episode milestone tonight, 19 years after its post-Super Bowl debut. The show wisely focuses on the series’ best relationship for this very special episode, titled “Dog Bites Bear,” with Stewie and Brian on the road after an altercation involving Stewie’s beloved teddy bear, Rupert. Hey, if they could get over that loan shark thing and even Brian’s death, doesn’t it seem like they could get through anything?

Regular coverage

Fox is again all hopped up on winter premiere/finale nonsense:

The Simpsons (Fox, 8 p.m.)
Bob’s Burgers (Fox, 8:30 p.m.): special time for 8th season winter premiere
Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access, 8:30 p.m.)
The Last Man On Earth (Fox, 9:30 p.m.): 4th season winter finale
Shameless (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
The Chi (Showtime, 10 p.m.)
Crashing (HBO, 10:30 p.m.): Second-season premiere

Wild card

Divorce (HBO, 10 p.m.): In season one, Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church) talked about breaking up, circled around a possible reconciliation, and eventually decided to divorce. As season two kicks off, that status becomes official and Frances ponders, “Now what?” We’re happy to see that even though the couple has split, Robert is still around and has shaved off that ridiculous mustache. Wings and Sex And The City fan Gwen Ihnat will be around again to see how things transpire and to keep track of all the 1970s songs on the soundtrack.
