Fast & Furious + Blu-ray & iPhone = ?

As though the home video experience weren't complicated enough in the Blu-ray era (what with "BD Live" and interactive commentaries and the like), now comes word that Universal Studios Home Entertainment wants to bring the iTunes App Store into the mix. On July 28th, when Fast & Furious arrives on Blu-ray, Universal will be offering a free iPhone/iPod Touch app that will enable purchasers of the BD to access info about the film while watching it, or to control their WiFi-enabled players from their iPods, or to check out 360-degree views of the movie's hot rods. Necessary? Probably not. Cool? Uh… not really. But it should satisfy technophiles' desires to show off two pieces of equipment at once. If Universal could find a way to integrate a Kindle they'd have the hat trick.
