In 1989’s Major League, Charlie Sheen played Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn, a nearly blind pitcher straight out of prison who, with some training, became both an excellent pitcher and a bit of a ladies man. It was a weirdly career defining role for Sheen, and though the actor has been through some tiger-blood infused tough times since, he still feels some sort of connection with Vaughn—or at least with the celebrity that his connection with the Cleveland Indians can bring him now that the team is in the World Series.
At least, that’s the jist of Sheen’s recent Twitter activity. He’s been tweeting a ton as the team has journeyed through the post-season, and lobbied intensely to throw out the first pitch of the first game of the Series, though the Indians shut him down in favor of an Indians legend, Kenny Lofton. Sheen responded by lobbing a sort of curse at the Indians during the team’s Tuesday night’s game six blowout by the Cubs, tweeting a sort of odd poem:
Now, it seems like the Indians have either capitulated (Update: Nope.) or someone kicked Sheen some frequent flier miles and $2,000 for a ticket to the game, because the actor seems to be on his way to Cleveland for tonight’s game seven clincher. Tweeting a picture of a bag packed with Major League props like Wild Thing’s skull-emblazoned glasses, a Jobu statue, an Indians hat, and a baseball, as well as Sheen props like Marlboro Reds, a bag of Jack Link’s Tender Bites, and a Modelo Michelada, Sheen noted that “help is on the way!!” for “’BELIEVE’LAND,” adding Vaughn’s on-screen number, 99, and #GetMeVaughn. Whether that means he’ll throw out the first pitch at tonight’s game is really anyone’s guess, but one more Cleveland booster in the stands certainly can’t hurt the team (we hope?), especially given the droves of Chicagoans who have seemingly made the six-hour trek to the booming Ohio metropolis.
So far, the Indians haven’t responded or confirmed the rumors, but they did retweet this picture of a dog, so at least Cleveland has that going for it.
