Feature debuts from Rebecca Hall, Jerrod Carmichael, and Questlove lead Sundance 2021

Sundance 2021 will be—no surprises here—primarily a virtual event, the first in the festival’s 42-year history. And the lineup for this year’s festival, announced earlier today, will be slimmed down to match. 72 feature films, both narrative and documentary, were chosen from 3,500 submissions and will be featured at Sundance 2021—which sounds like a lot until you remember that last year’s total was well over 100 films. And while there won’t be any splashy red carpet entrances or packed houses roaring with approval, this year’s lineup is full of vital and intriguing work.

That includes the feature directorial debuts of several well-known names, as well as new endeavors from established filmmakers. In the first category is Rebecca Hall’s 1920s-set period drama Passing, starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, as well as Jerrod Carmichael’s debut as a director, On The Count Of Three, in which he casts himself as a regular guy embroiled in a twisted pact with his best friend, played by Possessor’s Christopher Abbot. The latter category includes Edgar Wright’s first music documentary, The Sparks Brothers, as well as the inspired pairing of cinematic madmen Sion Sono and Nicolas Cage in Sono’s English-language debut, Prisoners Of A Ghostland.

Sundance is known for its documentary premieres just as much as its narrative features, and this year’s lineup boasts an A-list directorial debut of its own: Summer Of Soul (Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary assembled from freshly discovered footage of the Harlem Cultural Cultural festival in the summer of 1969. Also on the documentary front, Waste Land’s Lucy Walker returns to the festival with the wildfire doc Bring Your Own Brigade, as does Nanfu Wang (One Child Nation) with In The Same Breath, a firsthand exploration of how the Chinese government turned a pandemic into a propaganda tool. And not to be outdone by last year’s Walter Mercado doc, another Latinx icon, EGOT winner Rita Moreno, gets her own biographical documentary in Rita Moreno: Just A Girl Who Decided To Go For It.

Sundance screenings will take place from January 28-February 3 in a hybrid format combining the festival’s virtual platform and what the festival is calling “Satellite Screens” at arthouses around the country. (Those are subject to pandemic conditions come late January.) Passes and tickets for Sundance 2021 will go on sale on January 7.

CODA / U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Siân Heder, Producers: Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, Patrick Wachsberger) — As a CODA – Child of Deaf Adults – Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family’s fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and her fear of abandoning her parents. I Was a Simple Man / U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Christopher Makoto Yogi, Producers: Sarah S. Jockey / U.S.A. John and the Hole / U.S.A. Mayday / U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Karen Cinorre, Producers: Jonah Disend, Lucas Joaquin, Karen Cinorre, Sam Levy) — Ana is transported to a dreamlike and dangerous land where she joins a team of female soldiers engaged in a never-ending war along a rugged coast. Though she finds strength in this exhilarating world, she comes to realize that she’s not the killer they want her to be. On the Count of Three / U.S.A. Passing / U.S.A. Superior / U.S.A. As surveillance technologies become a fixture in everyday life, the film interrogates the complexity of an objective point of view, probing the biases inherent in both human perception and the lens. At the Ready / U.S.A. (Director: Maisie Crow, Producers: Hillary Pierce, Maisie Crow, Abbie Perrault) — Home to one of the region’s largest law enforcement education program, students at Horizon High School in El Paso train to become police officers and Border Patrol agents as they discover the realities of their dream jobs may be at odds with the truths and people they hold most dear. Rebel Hearts / U.S.A. Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) /U.S.A.
