Feminist activists interrupt Woody Allen jazz performance

The Hollywood Reporter reports that a jazz performance by Woody Allen and his band was interrupted in Germany earlier this week, when two members of feminist group FEMEN—known for staging provocative nude protests—ran topless onto the stage to confront Allen over allegations that he sexually abused his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.

The protesters’ bodies were covered in passages from a 2014 letter Farrow wrote to The New York Times, describing the alleged assault. (One of her brothers, Ronan Farrow, wrote an essay supporting her claims last year.) The two women attempted to read a letter condemning Allen, but were physically dragged from the stage by security. Allen and his group quickly resumed playing.

FEMEN later released the letter to the press (translated from German):

Although the incident occurred decades ago, Dylan (now 31) is still suffering the consequences. Woody Allen is not just the neurotic and charming director, actor and musician, but a father who likes to stick his finger in his daughter. We’d like to remind the world, and jazz fans, of that fact.”

Farrow expressed approval for FEMEN’s actions, telling Salon, “He escaped justice for what he did to me,” and that these moments of public humiliation “are the equivalent of prison for him.”

Allen has frequently asserted that the assault never took place.
