The trailer for Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime, a sequel to his 1998 black comedy of fuck-ups Happiness—albeit one with entirely new actors playing the characters from the first film—debuted today, and as you can probably predict, it looks both dryly funny and dour beyond belief. In Wartime's parallel universe, Allison Janney, Ally Sheedy, and Shirley Henderson take over as the three sisters from Happiness, each of them trying to get on with their lives after enduring the various existential miseries of the last film, while also finding all new reasons to be sad over a surprisingly ashen Paul Reubens and The Wire’s Michael K. Williams. Suffice to say, even though it's got deadpan laughs aplenty, there’s probably never been a trailer for an ostensible comedy—even a pitch-black, glass-is-half-empty-and-filled-with-sexual-hang-ups comedy like this one—populated with this many crying people.
