Fifty Shades and other easy targets dominated this year’s Razzie Awards

The Academy Awards are tonight, but before we get into all of that glitz and glamour, it’s important to clean out some of Hollywood’s trash. In other words, the 36th annual Razzie Awards were held recently, and—as always—they took the time to honor the worst movies of 2016, all of which happened to be big-name productions that are fun/easy to mock. Unsurprisingly, then, Fifty Shades Of Grey managed to win a staggering five Razzies, beating out tough competition like Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Jupiter Ascending.

Criticizing Fifty Shades may be a little obvious, but there were some upsets this year as well. For instance, Adam Sandler—no stranger to Razzies—received several nominations thanks to his iconic work in The Cobbler and Pixels (The Ridiculous 6 must’ve been ineligible this year), but he failed to take home a single award. Apparently, rather than celebrating one of cinema’s greatest treasures, the Razzie voters were more interested in taking an extra shot at Fifty Shades. The show wasn’t all about poking fun at a movie that probably would’ve swept the Razzies even if it were actually good, though, as they also handed out the Razzie Redeemer Award (for previous winners who went on to do better things) to Creed’s Sylvester Stallone.
