Fifty Shades Darker trailer beats Force Awakens’ record despite lack of Chewbacca
Despite the complete and utter lack of a Millennium Falcon flyby to reawaken your childhood sense of wonder, James Foley’s erotic drama Fifty Shades Darker has set a new record for most views online by a trailer in its first 24 hours. Variety reports that the 2-minute clip has been viewed 114 million times across several online platforms, besting the 112 million views for previous record holder Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens. Clearly, America’s invested in seeing whether Anastasia finds happiness with her controlling, stalker-y, contract-obsessed paramour.
Darker, of course, is the much-anticipated sequel to last year’s Fifty Shades Of Grey, which earned over half a billion dollars at the box office by tapping into America’s love of S&M and extended contract negotiations. (The film also tied Fantastic Four for the Golden Raspberry Awards’ Worst Picture Award, as well as nabbing Worst Actor, Actress, Screen Combo, and Screenplay)
The new trailer sees the relationship between Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) rekindled, in the form of staring at each other intensely across various rooms, punctuated by bursts of passion, and a visit to the party from Eyes Wide Shut. As required by law, the trailer also features a slowed-down version of a well-known pop song, in this case, Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love,” slowly performed by Miguel. Kim Basinger also appears as a woman from Grey’s past who threatens to come between the couple, and Bella Heathcote appears and disappears as a different woman from Grey’s past who threatens to come between the couple.
