Final Assassin’s Creed trailer suggests the movie won’t hide from the games’ lore

The ongoing mythology in the Assassin’s Creed video games is, to put it mildly, bonkers. Oh, it may seem like it’s a relatively straightforward story about people stabbing other people throughout history, but there’s a whole present-day angle to it that the trailers for the movie version have wisely highlighted (so as not to trick anyone into thinking this isn’t a sci-fi action thriller at heart). This latest trailer, though, takes that openness even further, name-dropping a significant object from the games’ mythology that connects the series to aliens and a pre-human civilization that used to live on the Earth. It remains to be seen just how big of a leap the movie will make into that particular rabbit hole, but it just wouldn’t be Assassin’s Creed if it weren’t throwing caution to the wind and praying that there’s a convenient pile of hay at the bottom of that fall.

Anyway, Assassin’s Creed will be in theaters on December 21.
