Reddit is an online discussion platform where registered users can debate breaking news, share funny memes, and tell people why things they like are bad. Being a place of relative anonymity, however, the site’s innumerable discussion boards are prone to bringing out a user’s not-so-savory qualities, often to the detriment of those who wanted to politely discuss which is the best Beastmaster.
Well, if you’re worried you might be one of those jerks, there’s good news. Single-serving website R U A Dick can analyze your Reddit account to determine whether your presence skews towards the positive or negative end of the spectrum. In addition to compiling a list of your most positive and negative sentences, the program also measures how much anger, joy, fear, sadness, and surprise you exude in your posts.
The script’s creator is also offering a macro view by running it through a series of subreddits.
Every Monday I extract the top comments from the top posts of some of the most popular subreddits through the Reddit API. Each comment gets parsed into sentences and analyzed using the NLTK Sentiment Analyzer Vader Module which scores them based on how positive, negative, and neutral they are. Subreddits are ranked from most positive to least positive in the table below.
As of now, I Took A Picture stands out as the most cordial subreddit, followed by threads like Cosplay, Tattoos, and I Want To Learn. At the bottom of the list? Conspiracy, Rage, and, unsurprisingly, Watch People Die.
