Firefly coming to cable, Nathan Fillion cruelly gets hopes up about doing more episodes

Hearing your incessant cries of “Where’s Firefly?” the Science Channel has announced it will bring Joss Whedon’s short-lived sci-fi cult hit to basic cable beginning March 6, with every episode airing in their intended order and rendered in high-definition. Perhaps in order to justify the show’s inclusion on a network primarily devoted to factual science, each episode will feature an addendum in which physicist Dr. Michio Kaku discusses the actual theories behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

Of course, as undeniably popular as Kaku is with the kids (he’s basically the Lady Gaga of theoretical physics), it’s unlikely to assuage fans of their desire to see more from the show, something that’s not exactly helped by statements like those of Nathan Fillion, who tells Entertainment Weekly that he would gladly step into the role of Captain Mal again if Fox asked him to­—although he adds, “I’d have to examine very closely Fox’s reasoning—I’m a little gun-shy.” In Fillion’s dream scenario, of course, “If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.” So maybe start a Kickstarter campaign or something.
