David E. Kelley recently slingshot himself in the foot with the goofy Goliath, but he’s taking another crack at dark comedy with an adaptation of Big Little Lies. HBO’s released a teaser for the series so we can judge for ourselves just what kind of chance we’ll be taking when it premieres next year.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman both executive produce as well as star in the series as outwardly flawless moms with apparently perfect husbands and families. Shailene Woodley plays a single mom who’s kind of an interloper in this oceanside community. As dictated by the source book, these facades will crumble, but not before lots of sexy shenanigans and potentially perilous intrigues unfold. Accordingly, the teaser features lots of rolling around and gasping in bed, as well as a titillating masquerade. There’s also a little girl with a buzzcut, which could be part of a new mandate for TV series.
Big Little Lies also stars Alexander Skarsgård, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, and Zoe Kravitz, who may or may not also host key parties of their own. The series is scheduled for release in 2017.
