First Star Trek: Discovery cast photo is decidedly low tech
The publicity arms of various studios have gotten a real workout in recent years, having to figure out ways to hype up films even when little more than an embryo is available. Even the recent spate of set photos from productions like Alien: Covenant and The Predator only featured squeaky-clean casts who looked miles away from having their shit fucked up by chestbursters and intergalactic hunters. Now we’ve also gotten our first look at (some of) the Star Trek: Discovery cast, who are either in a rather low-tech mess hall—there’s not a food synthesizer in sight—or they’re still stuck here on Earth.
The image was shared last week by TrekMovie.com, having originated on Chris Obi’s Instagram account. Not long after, Obi, who plays the Klingon leader T’Kuvma, set his feed to private. But this screenshot’s been making its way around Trek-loving properties. That’s Discovery captain Jason Isaacs, Shenzhou captain Michelle Yeoh, Obi, Sonequa Martin Green—who plays the lead character—and her husband Kenric Green (who is not in the show). They’re joined by Doug Jones, who’s playing the Discovery’s science officer, and James Frain, who stars as Sarek. Finally, we have Shazad Latif, who plays protege to Obi’s Klingon leader.
Discovery’s crew doesn’t have quite as immediately perilous a journey ahead as the folks aboard Covenant and that Predator school bus, but the show has experienced a lot of the same obstacles on the path to filming. The series was originally supposed to premiere early this year, but has now been pushed back to some time this summer or fall.
