Florida jury awards Hulk Hogan $115 million in Gawker sex tape trial
After a salacious trial in which the intimate details of Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea’s sexual relationship with his best friend’s (now ex-) wife—including discussion of the size of his little Hulkster—were aired in court, a Florida jury has ordered Gawker Media to pay the (now ex-) WWE Hall of Famer $115 million in damages. Maybe now he can replace some of those T-shirts he ripped up.
The lawsuit stems from Gawker’s 2012 posting of a sex tape featuring Hogan running wild all over the then-wife of his pal, a radio “shock jock” who goes by the name Bubba the Love Sponge. (Bubba declined to testify in the trial, but according to all parties involved the encounter took place with his consent—encouragement, even.) According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gawker’s defense was prohibited from entering perhaps—depending on which you find more offensive, racist language or the bare ass of a 62-year-old white dude who’s been tanning for decades—the most scandalous part of the tape into evidence: A snippet of audio where Hogan uses racial slurs to describe his daughter’s boyfriend at the time, who is black. (Hogan later apologized, using the “I’m not racist, I’m just from Florida” defense.)
Court records detailing correspondence between Hogan and Bubba, as well as the sex tape itself, were also barred from evidence thanks to pre-trial hearings THR describes as “strongly favoring Hogan.” Did we mention the trial took place in Florida?
