Fly west for the Erotica Awards with The Deuce
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, September 23. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
The Deuce (HBO, 9 p.m.): Sometimes, when you’re a fictional TV character, you need to get out of town and leave it all behind, you know? Don Draper. Jess Mariano. The Golden Girls. Lori (Emily Meade), Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and Harvey (David Krumholtz) carry on that proud narrative tradition, heading West for the bright lights of Hollywood. The occasion: the AFAA Erotica Awards, a big night for nominees Lori and Harvey and an equally important occasion for Candy, who hopes to secure funding for her artsy Red Riding Hood-themed film. Noel Murray is taking over The Deuce beat, and he’ll be ready to get into the ins and outs of the biz while luxuriating in his best Halston.
Regular coverage
Shameless (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
Venture Bros. (Adult Swim, midnight)
Maniac (Netflix, continuing)
Wild card
9-1-1 (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): Ryan Murphy’s Angela Bassett-fronted wacky-intense paramedic show returns for its second season tonight, with a real dearth on Connie Britton but a new cast member in tow. Party Of Five devotees rejoice, for Jennifer Love Hewitt has returned to Fox. She’s definitely not a Connie Britton replacement, but she’s also a famous woman with great hair who’s playing the operator, so she’s not not a Connie Britton replacement. Regardless, there’s still great hair—and crazy emergencies—to behold.
