Foo Fighters return to the silly video business with new football-themed sketch

Controversy struck the Super Bowl halftime show this year when artists began turning down offers to perform out of solidarity to Colin Kaepernick, who says he was blacklisted by the NFL for taking a knee during the national anthem as an act of protest. As the organizers scrambled for acts to join Maroon 5—they eventually scored Travis Scott and Big Boi—another, more enticing event was percolating outside the stadium walls. That would be DirecTV’s annual Super Saturday Night, which scored two major gets in Run The Jewels and the Foo Fighters.

The event’s sold out, but DirecTV users will be able to stream it for free when it goes down on February 2. And, as a means of hyping the event, Dave Grohl and his bandmates channeled some of that “Big Me” magic—it’s still their best video—with a new clip that gives them the Necessary Roughness treatment.

As the San Fernando Jackalopes, the ragtag Foos adopt the archetypes you’ll find in any misfit sports movie, be it the ex-con (Grohl), the ladies man (Taylor Hawkins), or the mindless lug (Pat Smear). Real-life announcers Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan cameo in silly wigs and ‘70s garb.
