For Richer Or Poorer

For Richer Or Poorer

Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley star in this formulaic, poorly written piece of cinematic excrement as a rich, unhappily married couple forced to flee to Amish country in order to avoid being arrested for tax fraud. Of course, the simple life teaches them the errors of their materialistic ways, and they fall back in love as they engage in menial labor on the farm. The first hour of For Richer Or Poorer is jaw-droppingly bad: Not only does the witless, abrasive banter between Allen and Alley make the dialogue of their respective television shows seem like the lost work of Noel Coward, but the film itself looks cheap and ugly. At least the formulaic, greed-is-bad comedies of the mid-'80s allowed the audience to vicariously enjoy the empty, hedonistic lifestyles of their protagonists before tacking on some sort of cheap moral; For Richer Or Poorer is too lazy to allow even such small pleasures. Instead, it's full of ugly, poorly lit scenes like the one in which Alley waddles around a field on all fours, braying, "I'm covered in cow poopy!" while Allen grimaces in the foreground. Things improve slightly during the film's second half—the scenes of Amish life are at least filled with pleasant-looking, albeit computer-generated, scenery, and veteran character actor Jay O. Sanders gives a nice performance as the low-key father of the Amish family—but overall, For Richer Or Poorer is a monumentally irritating, unfunny waste of time.
