Calling Captain Jack Harkness, the president requires your “services.” The Live Feed blog at The Hollywood Reporter announced last week that Fox is collaborating with BBC Worldwide and Russell Davies to bring a new version of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood to American television. Russell Davies is writing the pilot with Torchwood’s original producing team making the Atlantic crossover as well. For non-Anglophiles or those without BBC America, Torchwood is about an underground alien investigations unit based in Cardiff, Wales; THR’s claim that it’s “like 24 with aliens” is spot on. The news report also speculates that John Barrowman, who plays horny Capt. Jack, might make the transition to American airwaves if the show is picked up.
This sounds all good and grand, but did anyone catch the key word in this announcement? That’s right, folks, Fox. Fox, the long-term home of The X-Files, but very recently the final resting place of canceled shows Dollhouse, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Firefly, Tru Calling, and John Doe. And those are just the science fiction ones. If Torchwood gets picked up, here’s hoping Fox doesn’t put it in the ground too soon.
