Fox drafts Mark-Paul Gosselaar for baseball drama Pitch

After his truth-telling ways proved too much for NBC, Mark-Paul Gosselaar has rebounded with a lead role in a baseball drama. Deadline reports that Gosselaar will join Under The Dome’s Kylie Bunbury in Fox’s Pitch, the aforementioned baseball drama that will star Bunbury as Ginny, the first female major-league pitcher. The series comes from Rick Singer (Younger) and Dan Fogelman (Grandfathered), who are writing the pilot that Fox ordered last month.

Gosselaar will play Mike Lawson, “a handsome, charming, self-assured future Hall of Fame MLB catcher,” who shows Ginny the ropes. Mike is initially “skeptical” of Ginny, presumably because she’s mononymous. But Mike will eventually get over his doubts and the two will redefine “team chemistry.” (That’s in an actual press release somewhere.) Mike appears to have received far more characterization than Ginny, who so far has only been described as a “young female pitcher who defies the odds when she becomes the first woman to play in the major leagues.” That’s quite an accomplishment, but Singer and Fogelman will probably want to take some time to flesh out their lead, starting with giving her a last name.
