Fox gets into the Greg Berlanti business, orders a Black Lightning pilot

Last week, we reported that Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, and Legends Of Tomorrow producer Greg Berlanti was shopping around a new superhero project based on DC’s Black Lightning, and Variety is reporting that Fox has just snatched up the show with a “pilot production commitment”—which is industry talk for “they’re going to make a pilot.” Black Lightning is being written by Being Mary Jane’s Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil, and it’ll reportedly revolve around a former superhero who retired to spend time with his family. When he discovers that his children are in danger, though, he’s forced to get back into the superhero game.

The Black Lightning character was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, and in the comics he typically has electricity-themed powers—hence the name. However, it’s unclear at this point if the guy in Berlanti’s show will have powers or if he’ll be a more traditional masked vigilante. Considering how far Fox’s other comic book shows (Gotham and Lucifer) have strayed from the source material, it could really go either way.
