Fox has acquired the rights to Amulet, a bestselling graphic novel series from cartoonist Kazu Kibuishi, with the intention of turning the young adult franchise into a feature film. Published by Scholastic, the series tells the story of a young woman exploring a fantasy world full of robots and warmongering elves, aided by her family and the power of a magically enabled stone. The series, praised for its fantasy storytelling and Kibuishi’s colorful art, has been running since 2008, and currently numbers six volumes, with a seventh expected next year.
Fox picked up the rights to the series via a partnership with Temple Hill Entertainment, the production company behind young adult franchises like Twilight and The Maze Runner. Amulet, presumably, will receive a similar treatment, although it’s not clear at this point what sort of movie the two companies will ultimately make. An animated film would be the obvious route, but we can just imagine a film executive impatiently pointing out that, “The Hunger Games wasn’t animated,” sending everyone involved into a bow-equipping, dystopia-generating frenzy to bring the project more in line with current Hollywood trends.
