Fox is giving Star a second act
Proving just how eager it is to remain in the Lee Daniels business, Fox has just renewed Star for a second season. The Empire creator’s sophomore effort is another music drama, but one that focuses on a middling girl group that’s tearing itself apart from the inside out instead of a family of artists that is tearing itself apart from the… well, you get the picture. It stars Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, and Naomi Campbell, who do not make up the girl group in question, but are infinitely more interesting than the central trio played by Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady, and Ryan Destiny (more’s the pity).
While making the announcement, Fox entertainment president David Madden—who was also kicking up his heels over the Lethal Weapon renewal—said that Daniels “is a true visionary and he and Tom Donaghy have delivered a series with a unique and meaningful point of view.” Star hasn’t been burning up the ratings charts, but it has held its own, averaging between 1.2-1.3 adults 18-49 live plus same day rating over the last month. That puts it roughly on par with Lucifer and Lethal Weapon, which joined The Mick in early renewal heaven.
