Fox makes a pact with Lucifer (and Minority Report)
NBC’s recent attempt at a supernatural drama series based on a Vertigo comics character didn’t go so well, but maybe Fox’s will fare better. After all, the network just made a deal with Jerry Bruckheimer. (What, you thought we were going to say the Devil?)
The network has officially picked up Lucifer, executive produced by Bruckheimer, Californication creator Tom Kapinos, and Sleepy Hollow’s Len Wiseman and starring Welsh actor Tom Ellis as the suave Lord of Hell. Weary of hanging out with the tortured souls of history’s greatest monsters (Ted Bundy seems like he would be a chatty one), Lucifer abandons his post for what Deadline calls “the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.” In other words, a police procedural. Kapinos wrote the script for the pilot, which was directed by Wiseman.
Fox’s other big pickup last night was Minority Report, written by Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein and based on the 2002 Tom Cruise movie based on the 1956 Philip K. Dick story of the same name. The story takes place 10 years after the events of the movie, and stars Inside Llewyn Davis’ Stark Sands as a former Precog still plagued by visions of the future, Meagan Good as a detective “haunted by her past” and presumably her proclivity for sharp pantsuits, Wilmer Valderrama doing Wilmer Valderrama stuff, and Mad Men’s Laura Regan as Agatha, the most powerful of the Precogs. According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg, who directed the original movie, saw the pilot for the show and liked it so much, he attached himself as an executive producer. Maybe he knows something the rest of us don’t?
This news comes after Fox picked up comedies starring handsome ’80s throwbacks Rob Lowe and John Stamos—as well as yet another medical drama—on Thursday.
