Fox recycles old soundbites in an animated X-Files teaser

For a while, Fox’s promotional strategy for the new X-Files revival seemed to be “just give them 10 seconds of footage at a time!” Then at the end of last month, the network finally released a real, full-length trailer that confirms—in 120 whole seconds—that Mulder still believes and Scully still wears the heck out of a pantsuit. Now, it seems Fox has backtracked a bit by releasing a new teaser that just features old soundbites over an animated sequence. Sure, it’s pretty, but we’re all a bunch of footage-thirsty zealots who want more than just lines we’ve already heard, dammit! The animated promo features a guest appearance from the Cigarette Smoking Man, and if nothing else, people will at least get a good Facebook cover photo out of it.

The revival series has already turned a bunch of fancy Hollywood folks into giddy fanpeople at the MIPCOM TV trade fair in Cannes, where an advance screening of the miniseries was met with high praise. During New York Comic-Con over the weekend, some lucky nerds also got a sneak peek of what’s to come when Mulder and Scully make their highly anticipated return to television.

The X-Files returns on Sunday, January 24 at 10 p.m. on Fox.
