Fox’s fall lineup shoots Seth MacFarlane into space, axes Scream Queens

Fox is staying in the Seth MacFarlane business, ordering what is being called his “passion project,” The Orville. It’s an hour-long sci-fi dramedy set 400 years in the future starring the Family Guy creator as the newly appointed commanding officer of the U.S.S. Orville who discovers his ex-wife (Adrianne Palicki) is the first officer. The pilot is directed by Jon Favreau. The Orville has a spot in Fox’s new fall schedule at 9 p.m. after Gotham on Thursday nights.

The network’s other big fall drama, X-Men series The Gifted, will air at 9 p.m Monday, following Lucifer. On Tuesdays, Fox is trying to lift The Mick, sandwiching it at 9 p.m. between Lethal Weapon at 8 p.m. and Brooklyn Nine-Nine at 9:30 p.m. “We’re really big believers in The Mick,” Fox Television Group chair and CEO Dana Walden said during a press conference, adding: “We really see enormous potential in it.” Wednesdays are a Lee Daniels night with Empire and Star, while Adam Scott and Craig Robinson will hunt ghosts on Sundays between The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Meanwhile, Walden’s fellow Fox TV Group chair and CEO, Gary Newman, confirmed that there are “no plans at this point” for more Scream Queens. That said, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk will return to the network in midseason with first-responder drama 911 starring Angela Bassett, which debut alongside other midseason additions including the latest installment of The X-Files, the final season of New Girl, and newcomers LA To Vegas and The Resident. Newman noted that 24: Legacy is “very much still in the mix,” but star Corey Hawkins’ current Broadway commitment prevented it from showing up on the fall schedule. Walden later said Fox would ”consider doing more episodes” of Prison Break, the revival of which was promoted as a limited series. ”It’s definitely not something we want to do every season,” she said. “We want to make it special.”
